Defense!

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

I’m not sure how soon I’ll have complete data to share with you, but I’ve started calculating defensive stats for 2006 minor leaguers.  I’m starting with David Gassko’s “Range” stat, which you can read more about here.  Or, to see a few numbers right away, check out my introduction on Brewers prospect Ryan Braun.

Arizona Fall League Stats are here!

Monday, October 16th, 2006

MinorLeagueSplits.com now features splits from two instructional winter leagues: the AFL and the Hawaii Winter League.  The AFL home page is here.  I can’t promise daily updates to these, as I did during the regular season, but at the very least, these splits will be kept within 3-5 days of current.  (Remember that, for accuracy and other reasons, the site is never updated beyond 2-3 days ago.)  This is yet another way you can follow your favorite prospects, and in the AFL, there are plenty of them.

Hawaii Winter Baseball!

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

The Hawaiian Winter League started play on October 1st, and starting today, Minor League Splits features the same complete situational stats on HWL players and teams that it does for every other league. One part of that I’m really excited about is that the site now includes all that information on several Japanese players–about 32 of them, at first count. Click here for the HWL home page: from there, you can see team rosters, and from the team rosters you can see each player’s stats to this point in the season.

As I did during the season, I’ll update each day’s play two or three days later. For instance, I just updated all stats through October 7th. Starting in a few days, I’ll also start compiling stats for the Arizona Fall League: watch this space for updates on that score.

2006 Stats Are Complete

Monday, September 11th, 2006

As of yesterday afternoon, all Minor League Splits stats are complete through the end of the regular season.  I’m probably going to collect the postseason stats in some form, but I’ll keep those separate.

As many of you have pointed out to me, there are errors in the data.  I’m aware of most of them, and working to correct them.  The biggest flaw is that, especially in April and August, non-pitchers are being credited with innings pitched.  Accordingly, many pitchers haven’t been credited with all of their IP.  The other major problem is out-counting–it probably only occurs once every several games, but occasionally I have events occuring with 3 outs already recorded.

Now that I no longer need to spend time each day updating the databases, I can focus on expanding the site’s coverage.  I’m eventually going to branch out into a variety of defensive stats, add all the 2005 splits I can find sources for, and perhaps include pitch-by-pitch data.  I’m also going to see what I can accomplish with all of this data and create a research section on the site for myself and others to post their findings.
